Road & construction crews · 5 minutes
Work zones are where our trucks, our crews and public traffic meet. In 2024, 850 people died in U.S. work zone crashes, and large trucks or buses were involved in 31% of the fatal crashes (FHWA).

Know the traffic control plan before you arrive: where the work is, where traffic flows, and where you’re supposed to enter and exit.
Enter and leave only at the planned access points. Signal early and give traffic time to see you.
Never back into an open traffic lane. If you need to back inside the work area, use a spotter and know where every worker is.
Wear Class 2 or Class 3 high-visibility clothing any time you’re outside the cab near traffic, and Class 3 at night and around higher-speed traffic.
Follow the flagger’s signals and the signs. Don’t park in the buffer space; it’s there to give an errant car room to stop before it reaches the crew.
If a car comes into the work area, warn the crew and get out of the way. Don’t try to stop it.
Temporary traffic control in work zones follows Part 6 of the federal Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices, and workers in the right-of-way of federal-aid highways must wear high-visibility clothing (23 CFR 634). On construction sites, OSHA requires signs, signals and flaggers to follow the MUTCD (29 CFR 1926.200 to 1926.203).
General safety information for crew meetings, not legal advice. It doesn’t replace your company’s safety program, required training or site rules. Rules checked October 2026.
