The trucks
Fire apparatus is built to order. A department specs each truck around its district, water supply and staffing.
| Truck | What it does | Typical setup |
|---|---|---|
| Pumper (engine) | First-due firefighting with water, hose and pump | Fire pump, water tank and hose beds on a custom or commercial chassis |
| Aerial ladder or platform | Elevated rescue and water streams | Tandem-axle chassis, sometimes a tractor-drawn tiller |
| Water tender (tanker) | Brings water where there are no hydrants | Large tank, dump valves and a portable pond |
| Heavy rescue | Extrication, technical rescue and hazmat tools | Walk-in or walk-around body with generators and lighting |
| Wildland engine | Off-road brush and wildfire work | All-wheel drive, pump-and-roll, smaller tank |
| Command and support | Incident command, air supply and rehab | Command bodies on heavy chassis |
The people and the jobs
Firefighters drive and pump their own apparatus, and most departments train dedicated driver-operators (engineers) to do it. 87% of career firefighters work for local governments.
Licensing rules for firetruck drivers vary by state. Technician pay is shown at the diesel technician median. Pay: BLS, May 2025.
Safety on the job
Getting to the call safely is part of the job. Apparatus driving, roadside scenes and seatbelt use are long-standing fire service safety priorities.
- Seatbelts: every rider belted before the truck moves.
- Intersections: stop at red lights and stop signs, and clear each lane before entering.
- Roadside scenes: block with apparatus, use cones and high-visibility gear, and position upstream of the crew.
- Apparatus standard: NFPA 1900 sets design, performance and testing requirements for apparatus contracted from January 1, 2024, replacing NFPA 1901, 1906, 1917 and 414.
- Visibility: NFPA 1900 updated the rear chevron and reflective striping rules, so check the current edition before you spec graphics.

Write the spec around the department's real calls, staffing and roads, then build to NFPA 1900.
